With the addition of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in America last 2006, the government of Ireland through its casino committee started drafting their own policies as a response to the passage of the new law by America.
Seeing that a window of opportunity has opened when it included that some provisions on payment mechanisms in online gambling. The committee also sought to update its laws in order to provide proper market protection against scams and underage gamblers and promote public trust in e-commerce related to online gambling. They hoped that with the new policies they can attract more investors to this industry.
I say it is a good call for the Irish government. It is a sign that they are willing to adapt to the modern change in the international scene involving online gambling. They have realized that there is a potential income to be derived from such industry that is why they have strengthened there internal policies so that others will be protected and encourage to conduct business this way. This is good poker news for poker players. Playing poker online in Ireland will soon be more enjoyable just like in other countries who have passed laws such as the one in America. I just hope they could also come up with poker tips while they’re at it! J
On a more serious note, there is still a problem that these countries will have to face and that is a matter of taxation. This is an issue that has been debated since everyone wants jurisdiction. The one who has jurisdiction will have the money, so no one wants to give in.
