There seems to be a bias to online gaming - especially poker. Congress allows horse racing, the lottery and many other forms of gambling but not online poker. What is it in poker that makes it different from the rest? There seems to be no difference at all. Other games like lottery, horse racing and bingo are all forms of gambling, like poker. However, poker is being singled out by law makers. Even banks do not allow you to pay online casinos and sports books with their bank issued debit cards. On top of that, there is no law prohibiting it from operating. Poker seems to be treated differently. Why is this game being marginalized? I myself have no idea why is it so(actually I do). There is no compelling argument that operating online poker games is not ideally conducive as entertainment.
So here is why I think online poker is marginalized. It is simple, there really are too many dangers with it. You can play from anywhere, accounts can get hacked, and most of all it is terribly addicting. Online poker could easily be legal in the U.S.A., all they need to do is regulate it more. The fact is, gambling can be addicting. Think about Las Vegas (or any other casino in the U.S.) - for most people it is a vacation, and people bring $x amount of money that they plan to gamble with. When they lose it “most” people quit and feel it was all in good fun. However, many peopl don’t quit, and eventually lose everything they own. Now imagine those people who blow everything, but imagine they can do it literally from anywhere in which they have a computer. This is the danger, and this is why I think the U.S. does not allow it.
Another one of the reasons that poker does not get the respect it deserves is that law makers just don’t know how the online games work. They need to see for themselves how it operates in order for them to clearly understand the game and not make any sudden decisions against the game. All I am asking is to treat the online poker industry fairly. They should be in equal footing with other forms of gambling. Now that the game is becoming more popular and people are beginning to appreciate it maybe congress should consider making laws which would enable fair treatment. There seems to be a lot of restrictions when playing online poker. Now that it is considered a sport, maybe poker can gain the respect that it deserves.
