An internet savvy poker writer on VegasSport-Odds.com wrote recently on the skills required to be successful at online poker games.

It was a revealing piece that focused on the importance of discipline and self-control when seated at the internet poker table—perhaps even more important in online poker than in offline poker.

The piece describes how emotions are the detriment of the online poker player.

It also discussed the importance of the ability to think several hands ahead, much like a chess player thinks several moves in advance. Only novice players, we are told, focus solely (or even primarily) on the hand at hand (so to speak).

And of course, no discussion of the meritous traits of the winning online poker player would be complete without assert the requirement for nerves of steel. Courage is not to be confused with aggressiveness at the poker table, as the former can help you win as often as possible and avoid losing your shirt the rest of the time, where the latter is always more of a gamble than anything.

I read an excellent article today that listed 7 points to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to bluff. I found the information so useful, I just had to summarize it here for you:

Kind of player – It’s better to bluff tighter players. If you peg your opponent as a loose player don’t bother trying to bluff them.

Number of players – It’s better to bluff one player than many. Don’t even bother trying to bluff groups of three or more.

Your image at the table – It’s better bluff if you’re seen as a tight player than if you’re seen as a loose one.

How well you can read other players – This should be obvious. It’s better to be able to read other players well before you consider trying to bluff them.

The cards – How the board looks is very important in pulling off a bluff. If you can represent the hand you’re pretending to have, that’s best. It’s also helpful if there don’t appear to be a lot of obvious outs for your opponent.

Size of the pot – This includes the actual size of the pot and how much your opponent is invested in it. It’s easier to bluff smaller pots that your opponent is not heavily invested in than large pots that your opponent has already dumped a load of chips into.

Position – It’s easier to pull off a bluff in last position because you can see what the other players are doing first, before you make your move. On the other hand, good players know this, and are more likely to expect a bluff from the person in position. It’s harder to pull off a bluff when you’re in the blinds, but it’s less expected and you can benefit from the element of surprise.

Playing poker entails a lot of psychological warfare. You should be able to read your opponents. This will help you a lot when you try to bluff or trap them later on. A first time player should know some of the mind strategies that will improve their game play.

There are various tips you could learn. First, you should know when your opponent is fishing. These types of players are just playing their hand and see if something comes up. It is also utilized if you are trying to determine if your opponent is bluffing or not. To handle this type of player you should not start big because they will surely fold. Raise the stakes small and they will definitely call.

The other type of player is the weak-tight. This kind of player is a does not want to lose all their chips. This kind of opponent is ideal for bluffing. You could bet all in at the last and surely they will fold. However, do not do this all the time because they may realize that you are bluffing and call your all in. The next type of player is the type aggressive this kind of opponent is tactically sound in making decision. The ideal way of handling this opponent is to change your pace when you bet. Lastly, there is a player who is hyper aggressive. You will not know if they are bluffing or they have guts all the time. You can test this type of player by raising your bet or call. Don’t always do this when you have a good hand because your opponents will notice and fold. Knowing these types of players will definitely help you exploit their weakness and outwit them at their own game.

Three Card Poker is a shape of stud poker presenting 3 ways to bet, and 4 ways to win on your hand. You may play next to the dealer, or bet on your hand’s value alone, or both. When you sit down at a table for 3 card poker, the one you want to beat is the trader, not the other players, but the hands the other players are holding impacts your game by lessening the probability that the dealer has the cards he’ll need to beat you – if you decide to play against his hand.

Gamble and Play Bets:

To play alongside the dealer, place a bet in the Ante spot. Then 3 cards are dealt to everyone, including the dealer. Once you’ve seen your hand you may continue in the game by placing a bet in the Play spot, equal to your Ante bet. The dealer must have at smallest amount a Queen high to “qualify.” (You need a similar hand to avoid losing, at least Q-6-4 or better. See the 3 card poker Strategy at the end of the page.) You may make a decision to fold after seeing your hand, and thus forfeit your Ante bet. Otherwise, the likely scenarios are as follows:

1. Dealer DOES NOT qualify: Your Ante bet wins even money, 1 to 1. Your Play bet is considered a push (returned to you).

2. Dealer DOES qualify, and the dealer’s hand beats yours. Then both your Ante and Play bets lose.

3. Dealer DOES qualify, and dealer’s hand ties yours. You’re Ante and Play bets are returned.

4. Dealer DOES qualify, but your hand beats his: Both your Ante and Play bets win 1 to 1.

The value of the hands is as follows, from highest to lowest: Straight Flush, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Pair. If neither dealer nor player has a pair, then the hand with the highest card wins. Aces are highest unless in a straight with 3, 2, A.

Pair plus Bets: To bet on your hand’s value alone, place a bet in the Pair Plus spot. Then 3 cards are dealt to each player (and the poker dealer). If you have a pair or better, it wins according to these payouts, usually:

A Straight Flush wins 40 to 1.

Three of a Kind wins 30 to 1.

Straight wins 6 to 1.

Flush wins 4 to 1.

Pair wins 1 to 1.

Now, we did say there were 4 ways to win in 3 card poker. The last way is a Bonus on your Ante gamble when you happen to have an excellent hand. This is based on your hand over alone, and it doesn’t matter pardon? the dealer has. …If you have a Straight Flush, you win 5 to 1. Had Three of a Kind, you win 4 to 1. And a Straight wins 1 to 1.

3 CARD POKER STRATEGIES:

If you don’t have at least Q-6-4, you should fold. In computer trials of the game, it has been seen that this hand is the lowest you can have and more frequently than not, limit your losses or actually win. If you have Q-6-4, you should play it because statistically your chances are better to play it than to fold. And, of course, any hand that wins a Pair Plus bet should not be folded.
